“The main thing is, Tootie, that we're all going to be together, just like we've always been. That's what really counts. We could be happy anywhere as long as we're together.” - Esther Smith Meet Me in St Louis is one of the most classic, vintage films. And it just so happens to be my favorite film Judy ever did. The first Judy film and song, I believe, I ever heard or watched was The Wizard of Oz and Over the Rainbow. Over the Rainbow and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas are my absolute favorite songs, however, Meet Me in St Louis is my favorite film (Wizard of Oz is a close second). I became a Judy Garland fan after seeing a clip of Judy in The Trolley Song scene and thought it was wonderful. When I ended up watching the film for the first time, I honestly didn't like it too much. But once I watched it again a bit later, it became one of my favorites and now is my favorite! :) The film itself is very comforting. Being able to be a part of the Smith family for a year- 1903 to 1904- is something very enjoyable and feel like your there yourself. Seeing the Smith children (all over a wide age group) work through their own conflicts and figuring it out and growing through them. This doesn't even include how Christmas and the holiday season is arriving quite fast (I'm so excited!) and this film happens to be considered also a classic, holiday film.
This film also received very nice reviews in the news at the time of its release. In The New York Times, an article titled "THE SCREEN; Meet Me in St. Louis,' a Period Film That Has Charm, With Judy Garland and Margaret O' Brien, Opens at the Astor", written by Bosley Crowther read: Miss Garland is full of gay exuberance as the second sister of the lot and sings, as we said, with a rich voice that grows riper and more expressive in each new film. Her chortling of "The Trolley Song" puts fresh zip into that inescapable tune, and her romantic singing of a sweet one, "The Boy Next Door," is good for mooning folks... As a comparable screen companion to "Life With Father," we would confidently predict that "Meet Me in St. Louis" has a future that is equally bright. In the words of one of the gentlemen, it is a ginger-peachy show. To read the full article, click here!
